Hummingbird's eXceed PC X Servers Deliver Workstation Applications to PC Desktops at QUALCOMM

A Hummingbird eXceed Application Story

As the information revolution speeds ahead, the need for communication services such as voice, data and fax will increase dramatically. At the heart of this revolution will be sophisticated new information communication technologies such as digital wireless telephone and satellite communications systems. Orbiting satellites, digital cellular systems and conventional telephone lines will create a seamless, worldwide communications network capable of delivering information to anyone anywhere on the planet.

QUALCOMM is a leader in the development of advanced communications systems, and products based on digital wireless technology and satellite communications. QUALCOMM's innovative OmniTRACSĀ« system is the world's most technologically advanced two way mobile satellite communications and tracking system for land based fleets. OmniTRACS provides transportation companies with data transmission and reporting services worldwide.

QUALCOMM is pioneering the next generation of digital wireless telephone communications using its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology. CDMA technology, is a method of encoding and transmitting digital signals across a broad spectrum of radio bandwidth and may provide a long-term solution to the impending capacity crisis in the cellular telephone industry.

Distributing X Window Applications

QUALCOMM's manufacturing, R&D and engineering departments employ a variety of CAD/CAM and modeling applications, running on HP and Sun Microsystems workstations, to design and test digital communication equipment and technologies. The technical nature and processing demands of these applications, normally require a powerful and expensive workstation platform. However, because these applications support the X Window System, QUALCOMM engineers began experimenting with distributing the applications to other X capable desktops on the network, including their large installed base of personal computers.

QUALCOMM has selected Hummingbird's eXceed line of PC X display server software as their PC X Window System connectivity solution.

Workstation Power - Fraction of the Cost

With the use of Hummingbird's PC X server software, workstation applications are now viewed in windows on the PC, while they are actually running on network based workstations. Now, PC users can easily access the workstation applications such as HP's ME-10 (interactive 2-D CAD) and other design applications including, MDS microwave design and the HFSS high frequency modeler.

Eric Lentz, Computer Engineer at QUALCOMM stated, "Hummingbird's PC X servers deliver the high performance and reliability demanded by our engineers and technicians. They have also allowed us to leverage our investment in PCs and bring X to the PC desktop at a reasonable cost."

The challenge in today's computing environment is to deliver computing resources to the user, independent of hardware platform or operating system. The X Window System's interoperability and capability of distributing graphical applications allows workstation computing power, and applications to be shared amongst X-capable desktops, including PCs. This technology has allowed QUALCOMM to save thousand of dollars, earmarked for additional workstation seats, while leveraging its investment in personal computers.

For PC users at QUALCOMM, Hummingbird X servers provide transparent access to the computing and information resources of the network. This means significant cost savings to the company and increased employee productivity.
